GAME FARM #137

Somerset East Game Farm

Location And Size:
The farm is situated about 60km south west of Somerset East, Eastern Cape. The altitudes range from 330m to 785m above sea level. The topography is a mixture of steep hills, flatter areas of plateau on some of the hilltops, and a flat terraced floodplain flanking the Vogel River, which winds through the farm for about 11 Km, and eventually runs into Lake Darlington.

The farm consists of 4 portions which total up to 3531,8085ha Vegetation:
The vegetation consists of some small areas of Noorsveld veld type, but mostly of succulent mountain scrub or Spekboom.

Two tree species are icons of the property, these are commonly known as Pruimboom and Witgatboom. These trees ages range from a 100 to 600 hundred years old.

The banks of the Vogelriver are covered by very palateable grasses, including kikuyu.

The diversity of grazing and browse allows a large variety of game species to occur on the farm.

Infrastructure:
1)FENCE: The perimeter fence of the property is 62kilometres of game fencing(2,4m) with electrification. The specifications of the fence comply with the regulations of Nature Conservation and thus the property has a valid Certificate Of Adequate Enclosure(CAE).

2)ROADS: There is a total of 124kilometres of roads traversing the farm which allows access to 90% of the farm. The roads are constantly maintained and are therefore in a good state.

3)Housing: The main dwelling is a 4 bedroom farmhouse with 3 bathrooms. Coupled to the house are some outbuildings such as garages and toolshed. There are 3 staff houses with electricity and running water.

4)Sheds: The main shed is a huge construction of about 600 square metres. This has a fully functioning meat facility, such as coldroom, preparation table, meatsaw and sausage filler to enable one to process the venison which is harvested. The various implements, tractors and fencing materials are also stored here. There is a second shed which can be converted into more accommodation.

5)Irrigation: There are 5 Hectares of lands which can be irrigated. There is a dragline system in place with all the sprinklers. The water is pumped from the Vogelriver to a large earthen-wall dam which in turn allows the irrigation system to work using gravity.

6)Capture Facility: 2,5Hectares of the lands have been enclosed with a high fence to facilitate passive capture of the game. The animals are lured into the land by planting oats and are then chased onto trucks via a series of smaller camps and a loading ramp.

Income:
a)Eco-tourism: This industry is fast growing in the Eastern Cape, primarily due to the fact that we are malaria-free. The farm is only 5km from the northern gate of the Greater Addo Elephant Park(100 000Hectares) with the parks main draw card being the Darlington Lake. Guests could be driven to the park where viewing of the Big 5 would be possible. The potential is enormous. This is a summer activity so can be run in conjunction with hunting(winter).

b)Hunting: This can be split between trophy and venison hunting. Trophies would be offered to international clients who in turn only take the mount and the venison is sold off as income to the farm. Local hunters are mainly interested in hunting for the venison which enables weaker animals and old females to be harvested.

c)Carbon credits: Spekboom is a plant which converts the most carbon dioxide into oxygen. As the property has vast areas covered by spekboom it has been suggested that this be marketed on the international market for carbon credits. Studies are currently being done in the area to establish the value of this resource.

d)Environmental education: Due to the diversity of the fauna and flora on the farm, educational weekends could be arranged where children could be exposed to the outdoors and be educated about the environment.

It is situated on the R62 (well known tourist route) near Oudtshoorn (well known for Cango Caves, ostriches, Art festival and many more).

It is about 150km from the George (Garden Route) airport with a 1,8 km landing strip on the farm.

The farm consists of 9 eco-types concist of plant-, animal-, insect and succulent life according to the Vegetation Map for the Little Karoo Project supported by critical eco-system partnership fund by Jan Vlok, Richard Cowling & Trevor Woolf is available on the Gouritz Initiative website.
